Outsourcing servers or applications to the cloud is now common for everyone and nothing new. However, to do this, you still need a local infrastructure for clients and their management, because the software and policies on the desktop are not delivered through the cloud.
The Windows Virtual Desktop in Microsoft’s Azure Cloud environment should close this gap. A virtual desktop based on Windows 7 or Windows 10 provides the working environment for users.
The special feature for Windows 7 is that you get the extended support for security updates at no extra cost. Windows 10, on the other hand, is provided in an optimized multi-user version so that several users can work on one „PC“. This version is also optimized for Office 365 ProPlus.
If you already own Microsoft 365 licenses, you only have to pay the computing costs for the Virtual Desktop.
When exactly the Virtual Desktop will be available, Microsoft has unfortunately not yet announced. But it can be seen as an alternative to a local terminal server. The productivity of tablets can also be increased by simply accessing a full Windows PC.
Microsoft has announced mouse support for iPads so that the Virtual Desktop can also be used on tablets. This would make the mobile cloud workstation complete and mobile working easier than ever.
